An Archduke Ferdinand Moment?

While it’s rather disconcerting to be on the same wavelength as Michael Savage from time to time, it’s good to know I’m not the only one who experienced a weird sense of déjà vu on Friday, after the downing of Malaysian Air Flight 17. For some of us historically-minded types, that shocking event brought to mind a similar occurrence one hundred years ago.

Recall…
Europe –
In a state of geo-political turmoil –
Jolted by a sudden tragedy, the details of which are unclear, and likely to cause further unrest…

Where in the past have we seen a parallel set of circumstances?

Well coincidentally, just last month, June 28th marked the 100th anniversary of the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand, heir-apparent to the Austro-Hungarian empire, and his wife Sophie. These murders were the very spark that lit the fuse of the first World War.

While riding in the motorcade through the streets of Sarajevo on 28 June, Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie were shot and killed by Gavrilo Princip, a Bosnian member of the Black Hand (a Serbian terrorist group) […]

The assassination set off a rapid chain of events, as Austria-Hungary immediately blamed the Serbian government for the attack. As large and powerful Russia supported Serbia, Austria asked for assurances that Germany would step in on its side against Russia and its allies, including France and possibly Great Britain. On July 28, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, and the fragile peace between Europe’s great powers collapsed, beginning the devastating conflict now known as the First World War.

The point is, while the murders were a shocking, tragic event, they had no direct impact on America or her people – initially. Europe and her internal power struggles were half a world away. And even those more directly involved, on the continent itself, couldn’t have foreseen that this act of terrorism would light the flame of a world-wide conflagration.

And yet that’s exactly what happened. The assassination set off a mindlessly mechanical series of events that culminated in the world’s first global war.

The United States was eventually sucked into the massive conflict, on April 6, 1917.

So, back to the present day. When we consider the widespread instability around the world, particularly in Ukraine and the Middle East, along with the power vacuums created by Barack Obama’s lack of principled leadership, can we help but wonder whether or not the downed Malaysian flight will turn out to be this generation’s Archduke Ferdinand moment?

Interesting take from Doug Hagmann at Canada Free Press further affirms my suspicions ~

The downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 as it flew from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur yesterday, killing nearly 300 men, women and children, currently dominates today’s headline-rich environment. Accusations about who is behind this wholesale slaughter of innocents are serving as the drumbeats for war, and they are increasing in volume and tempo […]

To understand the significance of the downing of Flight 17, we must look at the bigger picture and think outside of the box created for us by those in power and their facilitators in the media. We must understand a bit of history, and realize that we are not seeing anything new in terms of tactics or orchestration […]

The reason, I contend, behind the downing of Flight 17 is much more nefarious than I’ve seen discussed elsewhere. Simply stated, it is my belief that we are witnessing the run-up to World War III.

There, he said it.
(Hagmann’s focusing on the trigger for U.S. involvement, comparing Flight 17 to the sinking of the Lusitania. Could be. Either way – bad vibes)
