Tish B’Av (or the 9th of the Hebrew month “AV”) is a hugely fateful day in Jewish history. This year it falls on July 25th to July 26th; from sundown to sundown.
According to My Jewish Learning website, Tish B’Av is commemorated by mourning and fasting ~
… according Jewish tradition, because it is the day the both the first and second Temples were destroyed. Observant Jews around the world will gather to read the Book of Lamentations The Book of Eicha (Lamentations) is Jeremiah’s poetic lament over the destruction of Jerusalem and the First Temple, is read both at night and during the day.
“AV,” the 5th month on the Jewish calendar, occurs in July/August of our Gregorian calendar. I have no clue how it all works; the 9th of Av corresponds to a different day every year. But over the millennia the date has come to be associated with one tragedy after another for the Jewish people.
The following chronology of events is from Olive Tree Ministries via the Jewish Report ~
Tish B’Av is an amazing day. Here is one timeline of events that happened on the 9th of AV. The Hebrew year is listed first and the common year in parentheses:

Many other calamities through the years are also associated with Tisha B’Av ~
Indeed, the rabbis of the Talmudic age made the claim that God ordained this day as a day of disaster as punishment for the lack of faith evidenced by the Israelites during their desert wanderings after the exodus from Egypt.
During the course of the centuries, a number of tragedies have clustered around this day, from the expulsions of the Jews from England and Spain to more localized disasters. Tisha B’Av is therefore observed as a day of communal mourning, which is expressed through fasting and the abstention from pleasurable activities and extraneous diversions.Source: MyJewishLearning.com
Considering the way events are spinning out of control across the globe these days, particularly the absurd nuclear negotiations with Iran – a country sworn to the destruction of Israel(!) – let’s hope and pray that yet another tragedy doesn’t befall the Jewish people this year.
