Maybe the EPA should rename itself “Environmental DESTRUCTion Agency”

EPAspill-colo5Oops. The Environmental Protection Agency failed in a massive way last week: EPA Admits Spilling Millions Of Gallons Of Toxic Waste Into Colorado River. On Wednesday morning, August 5th ~

… the federal organization in charge of fining and arresting people and companies for damage done to the environment, spilled over a million gallons of toxic waste into the Animas river in Colorado this week.
The waste came from an abandoned mining operation and turned the entire river a disgusting shade of bright orange.

An estimated 3 million gallons of mine waste, laden with heavy metals including lead and arsenic, has since coursed downstream through southwest Colorado into the San Juan River and New Mexico. Subsequently, states of emergency have been declared in La Plata County, CO, San Juan County, NM and the Navajo Nation (an area about the size of West Virginia which covers parts of New Mexico, Utah and Arizona).

How in the world did this disaster happen? Other than the leftist “Think Progress” website (which curiously announced “Abandoned Mine Leaks Millions Of Gallons Of Bright Orange, Toxic Water Into A Colorado River” as if the mine – inactive since 1923 – just spontaneously started leaking), most sources have described the spill as “accidental.”

And that’s the narrative the mainstream media is content to roll with. Notice the contrast in coverage with the BP Gulf oil spill; no 24/7 hysteria? After all, this is our big benevolent government – not some evil profit-driven corporation.

But – what’s this? If we dig a little deeper, this eco-nightmare appears to be more than just the typical bureaucratic ineptitude we’ve come to expect from this administration…
In fact, maybe it’s even “accidentally-on-purpose.”

As Gateway Pundit reported on August 12th, a letter to the editor of The Silverton Standard and The Miner, written by a retired geologist, eerily predicted just such an “accident” – a week before it occurred ~

The letter detailed verbatim, how EPA officials would foul up the Animas River on purpose in order to secure superfund money. If the Gold King mine was declared a superfund site it would essentially kill future development for the mining industry in the area. The Obama EPA is vehemently opposed to mining and development.

[And God Bless Dave Taylor for writing this letter,
and The Silverton Standard for publishing it!]

Even this AP story admitted that the despotic federal agency has been pushing to apply its Superfund program to this mine for a couple decades (of course you have to read all the way to the end of the article) ~

The EPA has considered adding a section of the Animas River in Colorado as a Superfund cleanup site at least since the 1990s because heavy metals from Gold King and other defunct mines were killing fish and other species.

The designation would have brought federal clean-up funds, but some in Colorado opposed the move in part because of the stigma attached.

(Well OK, if by “stigma” you mean millions of probably unnecessary tax dollars!)

Zero Hedge sums this debacle up nicely ~

The EPA actually has no concern for the environment, they just happen to use the environment as a cover story to create laws and gain an advantage for the companies that lobbied for exemptions to the agency’s regulations, and to collect money in fines.

And sometimes they might even have to precipitate a crisis to justify their miserable existence?

The EPA is trying to cheat Navajo Indians by getting them to sign away their rights to future claims from the agency’s Gold King Mine disaster, tribal officials charged Wednesday, adding more to the administration’s public relations problems over the spill that threatens critical Southwest waterways.
