US exits the ironically named UN “Human Rights” Commission

Lost in all the ginned-up hysteria over illegal aliens, amid the baseless outrage over Trump (most of the malcontents can’t even stammer out a coherent response if you ask what specifically the president has done to upset them), this happened last week ➡ Trump Administration Pulls US Out of UN Human Rights Council.

Conflating this story with the heart-wrenching coverage of illegal immigrant families torn apart at the border, some in the media did cover the story, but only as a means to further characterize the president as a callous brute, indifferent to all human suffering. Of course the facts don’t support that image.

The reality is, the UN Human Rights Council has been a complete farce since it was formed in 2006. Considering that it has condemned the state of Israel 78 times in the last 12 years (more than the rest of the world combined), it should more accurately be named the Anti-Israel Council. This anti-Semitic stance led the George W. Bush administration to boycott the Council for three years.

Of course Barack Obama – no doubt approving of the group’s strange definition of “human rights abuses” – promptly joined when he became president. He apparently saw no irony in the fact that countries like China, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, Cuba, Venezuela, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Pakistan are all members of the council. But in reality, the idea that these nations – each guilty of numerous human rights violations themselves – presume to sit in judgement of western democracies (most especially Israel), is preposterous.

Though I don’t agree with every position Ambassador Nikki Haley takes, she is definitely to be congratulated on this move ~

WASHINGTON (AP) — The United States announced Tuesday it was leaving the United Nations’ Human Rights Council, with Ambassador Nikki Haley calling it “an organization that is not worthy of its name.”

Haley, Trump’s envoy to the U.N., said the U.S. had given the human rights body “opportunity after opportunity” to make changes. She lambasted the council for “its chronic bias against Israel” […]

“We take this step because our commitment does not allow us to remain a part of a hypocritical and self-serving organization that makes a mockery of human rights,” Haley said.

“When a so-called Human Rights Council cannot bring itself to address the massive abuses in Venezuela and Iran, and it welcomes the Democratic Republic of Congo as a new member,” she continued, “the council ceases to be worthy of its name.

Haley&Pompeo
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, appearing alongside Haley at the State Department, said there was no doubt that the council once had a “noble vision.”

But today we need to be honest,” Pompeo said. “The Human Rights Council is a poor defender of human rights.”

Haley cited longstanding U.S. complaints that the 47-member council is biased against Israel. She had been threatening the pull-out since last year unless the council made changes advocated by the U.S. “Regrettably, it is now clear that our call for reform was not heeded,” Haley said.

Furthermore, as Breitbart reported ~

Haley indicated that the US was willing to consider rejoining the council if reformed were enacted to address her criticisms.

“We have used America’s voice and vote to defend human rights at the UN every day,” she concluded, “and we will continue to do so.”

After eight long years of the O’Ministration cozying up to dictators and alienating our allies, it’s reassuring to see the adults are back in charge of international affairs.

Nikki Haley Withdraws From UN Human Rights Council, Calling It A “Cesspool Of Political Bias” ~

The Council voted to condemn Israel on June 13 for excessive force against Palestinians protesting on the Gaza Strip, but the General Assembly’s text failed to mention Hamas.

“The nature of this resolution clearly demonstrates that politics is driving the day. It is totally one-sided. It makes not one mention of the Hamas terrorists who routinely initiate the violence in Gaza,” Haley told the Council.

“The United States will not be told by any country where we can put our embassy” ~

Ahead of the final UN vote condemning US recognition of Jerusalem as the Israeli capital, UN Ambassador Nikki Haley was unequivocal in her condemnation of the organization’s thuggish behavior.
