Ocasio-Cortez voters may have flunked history – or at least missed the chapters on the epic failures of socialism in the 20th century – but they might want to catch up on current events before they elect the Democratic Socialist to Congress next fall.

 
The sudden rise to fame of young Democratic Socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who just ousted a 10-term House of Representatives’ incumbent in the New York primary, is evidence of the sorry state of public education in America today. Students apparently graduate with no understanding of American or world history, much less civics and current events.
The 28 year-old former Bernie Sanders campaign worker stands for open borders (an end to national sovereignty?), promises free college tuition for all, thinks housing is a “human right,” seems to have anti-Semitic leanings and believes the bigger the government the better.

 
Although Ocasio-Cortez appears to be of Hispanic heritage, she clearly lacks any perspective on recent developments in the socialist paradise of Venezuela ~

The inflation rate in Venezuela has exploded over the last year as the socialist nation grapples with extreme levels of poverty and food shortages — even worse, a new report suggests that the inflation rate could increase ten-fold in the coming months.
 
According to The Week, five million Venezuelan Bolivars is equivalent to $1.45 in United States dollars, which is approximately the same amount that a minimum-wage worker earns in an entire month in Venezuela.

Soldiers were sent to almost 100 food markets across the country, according to the BBC. Maduro’s critics say his economic policies, and those of his predecessor Hugo Chávez, have wrecked Venezuela’s oil-rich economy.

Socialism always appeals to that naive, idealistic sense of “justice” so many young people possess. Unfortunately they lack not only a minimal knowledge of history – the results of that “justice” destroys the lives of millions – but an understanding of basic human nature. When reality catches up with the effects of socialism, a country’s wealth has either been squandered or is in the hands of tyrants, corruption runs rampant, and the population has been demoralized, oppressed and impoverished.
 
It’s too late for Venezuela. And probably New York’s 14th District. But hopefully not for the rest of America.
