Google – no longer concerned with being Evil?

For 18 years, “Don’t be evil” was Google’s signature corporate motto, embedded in their culture, and their code of conduct ~

“‘Don’t be evil.’ Googlers generally apply those words to how we serve our users. But ‘Don’t be evil’ is much more than that. Yes, it’s about providing our users unbiased access to information, focusing on their needs and giving them the best products and services that we can. But it’s also about doing the right thing more generally – following the law, acting honourably, and treating co-workers with courtesy and respect.”

Last May they quietly deleted that signature line from the company creed ~ Google drops ‘don’t be evil’ motto ~

(R)eferences to the slogan in the document were removed except for one brief mention […]

The Google Code of Conduct is one of the ways we put Google’s values into practice. It’s built around the recognition that everything we do in connection with our work at Google will be, and should be, measured against the highest possible standards of ethical business conduct. We set the bar that high for practical as well as aspirational reasons: Our commitment to the highest standards helps us hire great people, build great products, and attract loyal users. Respect for our users, for the opportunity, and for each other are foundational to our success, and are something we need to support every day.

[Hmmm.. Looks like they also removed “following the law, acting honourably.”]

So now it seems, no longer restrained by the old corporate guideline, one Googler simply couldn’t control himself in the wake of the Kavanaugh confirmation last Saturday ~ Google exec slams GOP over Kavanaugh ~

“You are finished, @GOP. You polished the final nail for your own coffins. F–K. YOU. ALL. TO. HELL,” wrote Dave Hogue Saturday, in the now-deleted tweet.

“I hope the last images burned into your slimy, evil, treasonous retinas are millions of women laughing and clapping and celebrating as your souls descend into the flames,” he added.

While the tech giant does feel they should respect their users – and each other – that courtesy is apparently not extended to fellow citizens with differing political views. Too bad the Golden Rule isn’t part of the Google Code of Conduct ~

“Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them,
for this is the Law and the Prophets.”
~ Matthew 7:12
