The First Lady was sure that kids would be thrilled with the “exciting changes” in their cafeteria food when they returned to school this fall.
“These healthy foods are good for your body, they’ll give you energy and make you stronger and they’re also good for your mind,” Mrs. Obama beamed in a video introducing the new program. Unfortunately, thanks to her aggressive battle to combat OOO (Obesity of Others), high schools are now forbidden from giving pupils more than 850 calories for their lunch – even if they’re fast-growing teenagers or even student athletes.
How’s that working out?
Michelle’s “Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act” was foisted on the nation’s school children on Dec. 13, 2010, during Congress’s lame-duck session. The act subsidizes and regulates what children eat before school, at lunch, after school, and during summer vacations in federally funded school-based feeding programs. Earlier this spring (2011), L.A. school officials acknowledged that the sprawling district is left with a whopping 21,000 uneaten meals a day, in part because the federal school-lunch program “sometimes requires more food to be served than a child wants to eat.” The leftovers will now be donated to nonprofit agencies. But after the recipients hear about students’ reports of moldy noodles, undercooked meat, and hard rice, one wonders how much of the “free” food will go down the hatch — or down the drain. Ahhh, savor the flavor of one-size-fits-all mandates.
Maybe it was all that food going to waste that had the nanny-state bureaucrats scaling back on portion sizes this year. Of course, “we can’t just leave it up to the parents,” Mrs. Obama, ever the good little Marxist, said.
