No thanks Ms. Gilbert, Congress doesn’t need any more theatrics

littlehouseonprairieOK, so you have warm and fuzzy memories of watching Little House on the Prairie. And now you’re all set to jump on the Melissa-Gilbert-for-Congress bandwagon: Gilbert to run for Congress against Mich. rep ~

Actress Melissa Gilbert, the “Little House on the Prairie” star who moved to Howell two years ago, said Monday she is running for Congress, as a Democrat, in the district of first-term Republican Mike Bishop of Rochester.

Oh sure, she’s got her lines down ~

“I’m running for Congress to make life a little easier for all the families who feel they have fallen through the cracks in today’s economy,” Gilbert said. “I believe building a new economy is a team effort, and we need to bring fresh voices to the table to get the job done.”

Yeah, blah, blah, blah…

But before our friends in Michigan’s US Congressional District 8 get all star-struck and throw away their vote on a Hollywood celeb, there are a couple salient points about the actress that they should be aware of.

First, my sense is that when she and hubby Timothy Busfield (a Michigan native) settled in the state in 2013, it was primarily to take advantage of Michigan’s film subsidies (an ill-conceived incentive program wherein tax-payers handed movie production companies 41 cents of every $1 they spent here).

I believe this because a) the pair was shooting an ABC-TV series in North Carolina (another state with film industry hand-outs) two years ago ; and b) last October Gilbert threatened to cancel plans for a new theater company she and Busfield were starting in Howell, MI, unless Democrat Mark Schauer won the state’s gubernatorial race (against incumbent Rick Synder), and increased the subsidies ➡ Little House on the Subsidized Prairie. (Schauer lost – and the theater company never materialized.)

Then there’s the not-so-small matter of the actress’s back taxes: Melissa Gilbert owes IRS $360K ~

The Internal Revenue Service recently accused her of failing to pay more than $360,000 in federal income taxes, a debt that is emerging one week after Gilbert announced she and her family are moving out of their rented home near downtown Howell.

Gilbert, 51, blamed the tax debt on a stalled acting career, the economy and divorce.

Are you starting to suspect that Ms. Gilbert’s motivation is somewhat less than a selfless impulse to serve the public?

The 8th’s current rep is first-term Republican Mike Bishop. He may or may not be a RINO (although he seems fairly conservative; he’s pushing for regulation rollbacks, has spoken out against sanctuary cities and Planned Parenthood’s horrific baby-parts peddling). But a RINO beats a self-serving Hollywood leftie any day.
