2000 years ago the followers of Jesus Christ refused to bow down to Caesar. Only the one True God was worthy of their devotion, worship and full allegiance. These early believers answered to a Higher Authority – and to a higher law. Where Caesar’s law was in conflict with God’s, there was no question which was to be obeyed.
Today, Kim Davis of Rowan County, Kentucky – like so many of those first Christians – has been arrested for defying “Caesar.” Here is a portion of the statement she released earlier this week ~
In addition to my desire to serve the people of Rowan County, I owe my life to Jesus Christ who loves me and gave His life for me. Following the death of my godly mother-in-law over four years ago, I went to church to fulfill her dying wish. There I heard a message of grace and forgiveness and surrendered my life to Jesus Christ. I am not perfect. No one is. But I am forgiven and I love my Lord and must be obedient to Him and to the Word of God.
I never imagined a day like this would come, where I would be asked to violate a central teaching of Scripture and of Jesus Himself regarding marriage. To issue a marriage license which conflicts with God’s definition of marriage, with my name affixed to the certificate, would violate my conscience. It is not a light issue for me. It is a Heaven or Hell decision. For me it is a decision of obedience. I have no animosity toward anyone and harbor no ill will. To me this has never been a gay or lesbian issue. It is about marriage and God’s Word. It is a matter of religious liberty, which is protected under the First Amendment, the Kentucky Constitution, and in the Kentucky Religious Freedom Restoration Act…
It’s difficult for secular progressives – or small “c” christians for that matter – to understand Davis’ position. They don’t realize that our faith isn’t something you embrace only when it’s convenient. For believers, God’s law will always trump man’s.
This explains why big “C” Christians throughout history have espoused the sanctity of human life, and vehemnetly opposed abortion, infanticide, slavery, the Nazis, and every other form of totalitarianism. Even under the threat of imprisonment. Even under the threat of death.
For the professing Christian, an oath to God trumps any oath to the state; especially a state who arbitrarily changes laws as it “progresses.”
How soon before the progressives start throwing us to the lions?
“I expect to die in bed, my successor will die in prison
and his successor will die a martyr in the public square.”
