Random links of interest, concern or curiosity from the past week or so, that deserve at least a SHORT mention:

Our quiet Sun produces “Musical Waves” in Earth’s Magnetic Field ~ In a randomly, evolved universe, what are the odds of a phenomenon like this occurring?

This week in Norway, a space weather observatory detected sine waves of exceptional purity rippling through Earth’s polar magnetic field. The waves, which persisted for hours with nearly perfect pitch […]

When a stream of solar wind hits Earth, magnetometers around the Arctic Circle normally go haywire, their needles swinging chaotically as local magnetic fields react to the buffeting of the solar wind. On Nov. 18th, however, something quite different happened. Solar wind hit Earth and produced … a pure, almost-musical sine wave

Euthanasia Activists Want Canada to Allow Killing Mentally Incompetent Patients ~ The next big slide down that slippery slope to hell. The easier it becomes to end a human life, the less value each life will have ~

(A woman with cancer that had spread to her brain) teamed up with Dying with Dignity to advocate for a change in the law that would make prior consent adequate – that is, that consent to euthanasia in advance directives would be sufficient if the person were mentally incompetent.

On the other hand ~ 24% Fewer Babies Have Been Killed in Abortions Over the Last Ten Years ~ Definitely something to be thankful for :)

Abortion rates are the lowest they’ve been in a decade, according to a report from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Abortions that were reported from 2006 to 2015 in participating areas fell 24 percent, from 842,855 to 638,169.

Pro-Life Chinese Mother of Five Children Responds to New Planned Parenthood President ~ Two Chinese immigrant women, with two very different views on the sanctity of life ~

Today raising a family in the U.S., Lisa Smiley escaped abortion in China and chose life for her “imperfect” son. Now she fights for the rights of all children, in and out of the womb.

Pro-Life Australian Senator Mockingly Announces Gender Change So He Can Speak Out on Abortion ~ Creative engagement! We need more of this ~

A male Australian senator mockingly proclaimed himself to be a woman before parliament last week so that he, as a pro-life male, could speak against abortion. Barry O’Sullivan made the announcement after being criticized for his faith and told he could not understand abortion because it is a women’s issue, Catholic News Agency reports.

“I’m going to declare my gender today, as I can, to be a woman, and then you’ll no longer be able to attack me,” O’Sullivan said.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Won’t Be the One to Finally Make Socialism Work ~ Because, like lipstick on a pig – as someone famously said – it will never work ~

Because Ocasio-Cortez is relatively young and attractive, along with being committed to socialism, she supposedly has the capabilities to team up with Bernie Sanders and bring about socialism that will not result in a loss of liberties, or drive whole societies into poverty, or at least that is what progressives believe.[…]

It is doubly-ironic that Ocasio-Cortez was an economics major at Boston University, although one doubts that economics taught there would differ from the usual statism that dominates most college economics programs. One doubts that she intellectually internalized anything that would resemble price theory and certainly would not be able to identify anything resembling a shortage or surplus. That she will advocate for government intervention and establishment of programs that almost certainly will lead to shortages should not be lost on anyone.

DC Pundits Get Almost Everything Wrong About Trump’s Saudi Posture ~ The first thing we need to understand is that the Arab world plays by a different of rules than the West. Mollie Hemingway offers some great analysis on the reaction to Trump’s reaction to Khashoggi’s murder ~

When determining U.S. interests in a region, the decision isn’t between finding saints to work with or forming no alliances. The decision is figuring out who to work with, if anyone, to advance U.S. interests.

Village moves to seize popular Chinese restaurant for nonexistent developers ~ Why do progressive big-government types always want to run everyone else’s life?

Chicago suburb failed once, but is trying again to redevelop its downtown and displace a business popular for more than 40 years […]

Attorney Robert McNamara (with the firm that litigated the eminent domain Kelo case in Connecticut) sees such local government projects as problematic.

“If they had any talent as real estate investors, they’d be real estate investors. But they’re not. They’re local government officials,” he said. “Their best option [to encourage growth] is to stop getting in the way of economic development.”

Missionary in Honduras: Don’t Validate Anarchy Here By Letting the Caravan In ~ A unique perspective we rarely get, from the migrants’ point of origin. Do we really want to import a new pathology into America?

Any Honduran could tell countless other stories of corruption and lack of police response. All lead to disorder and despair on a national level. Currently an international audience is watching on television what we see played out daily. That is, large masses who have very little respect for laws, boundaries and authority. They act as they do in large part because they have not had a healthy authority to trust in. Nor do they understand that actual consequences await when one breaks a law.

Brit scientists develop genetically modified virus that kills cancer cells ~ Whoa! A cure for cancer? This sounds legit. Shouldn’t it be front page news?

A genetically-modified virus that kills cancer cells and destroys their hiding places has been developed by British scientists.
It targets both cancer cells and healthy cells that are tricked into protecting the cancer from the immune system.

Lightning striking the Grand Canyon and a magical dive into an abyss: The stunning winners of the panoramic photography awards revealed ~ Some AWESOME photography! Grab a couple for screen savers.
